Acupuncture for Autoimmune Disease
There are many types of autoimmune diseases and we’re not quite sure what causes them. However, we still have treatments that can reduce symptoms and make it easier for you to cope with your condition. Many of our patients find that acupuncture helps them and the anti-inflammatory effect of acupuncture may be the reason.
What are Autoimmune Diseases?
Autoimmune disorders involve a problem with the body’s defense system, the immune system. For reasons that researchers haven’t quite figure out, the immune system can start to attack health cells in the body. They can be any cells or body part, from your brain to your toes. About two million Canadians are affected by one of 50 autoimmune disorders.
Some common autoimmune diseases include:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Scleroderma
- Psoriasis
- Lupus
- Irritable Bowel Disease
- Chron’s Disease
- Sjögren’s syndrome
There are many theories about what triggers these diseases but most believe that something has caused the immune system of someone with an autoimmune disease to be much more sensitive than normal. It could be a lack of exposure to germs as a child, a genetic problem with some part of the immune system, or something else entirely.
One thing we do know is that these autoimmune diseases are linked to inflammation. Most types cause some degree of inflammation which can be painful or increase symptoms.
What is Acupuncture’s Role in treating Autoimmune Diseases?
There are treatments available for autoimmune disorders and most of them are immune system suppressants that have the side effect of reducing your immune system’s function. It is sometimes not wise to start these medications early in life, or too aggressively, or you will likely get sick frequently.
As a result, those with autoimmune disorders often turn to other treatments that can help them reduce symptoms and feel more comfortable. Acupuncture is one potential treatment worth exploring. The tiny, flexible needles cause you to release endorphins, which can temporarily reduce inflammation. Many people find this to be a comforting treatment and it is not at all painful.
Acupuncture also does not cause bleeding or bruising as the needles are too small for that. Instead, patients report feeling a heaviness, a warmth, and deep relaxation. You should always feel comfortable and relaxed during acupuncture.
Also, keep in mind that acupuncture is not a replacement for the medication your doctor prescribes you for your autoimmune disorder. Instead, it is a complement to that medication which can help you reduce pain and feel more able to take on your day.
