Physiotherapy for Dizziness
Each time we take a step, we take for granted that our body can keep us balanced. Our eyes, brain, skin, inner ear, spinal cord, and more of our body co-ordinate to figure out which way is up and then to keep us upright. Problems with any of these parts of the body that contribute to our balance, even temporarily, may cause dizziness. That’s usually fine if the dizziness is short-lived. However, if you’re experiencing dizziness regularly then you know just how much of an impact it can have on your life. Dizziness is deeply uncomfortable and, depending on what you’re doing when the dizziness strikes, can be dangerous. Along with dizziness you might experience nausea, vomiting, headaches, vision issues, brain fog, mild memory issues, and other symptoms that interfere with your daily life.

Causes of Dizziness
When you’re dizzy and you don’t know why you’re feeling this way, it is important to have medical professionals assess you, including your family physician and your physiotherapist. There are a huge range of potential causes of dizziness, ranging from a temporary moment of low blood pressure to serious diseases that are likely to cause other complications and repeated dizziness.
Some of the most common causes of dizziness include:
- Injury to the inner ear
- Nerve damage, especially ear and eye nerves
- Low blood pressure
- Low blood sugar
- Certain medications, vitamins, and supplements
- Arthritis of the neck
- Brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease
- Strokes
- Concussions
- Inner ear disorders
Physiotherapists can support you through many of the conditions that cause dizziness. This is especially true for conditions or other problems with the inner ear, or the vestibular system, as well as for concussions and strokes.
Conditions that Impact the Vestibular System
There are a handful of conditions you may have that could impact the vestibular system and make you a better candidate for physiotherapy to help resolve or relieve your dizziness. Some of those conditions include:
- Infections of the inner ear
- Vestibular neuritis
- Labyrinthitis
- Meniere’s disease
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
- Vestibular schwannoma/acoustic neuroma
- Concussions
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physiotherapy that can benefit you if you have dizziness from inner ear issues or if you suffer from post-concussion syndrome.
Vestibular rehabilitation takes advantage of our brain’s amazing ability to adjust after we suffer injury. Your brain collects information about which way is up from your skin, ankles, feet and eyes, as well as the inner ear. All we need to do is retrain the brain to stop relying mostly on inner ear information and pay more attention to the other ways in which it figures out which way is up and keeps you balanced. We have various exercises that can support this process and help you minimize and sometimes eliminate dizziness altogether.
